Lazio lakes: Bolsena, Bracciano, Martignano

The lakes near Rome are one of the smartest alternatives to the sea during summer, while during winter they become a pleasant change to run away from the chaotic city’s atmosphere.

Rome has many lakes in its surroundings, created by volcanic eruptions, like Bolsena and Bracciano.

Either you will decide to go north or south, you will find for sure, near those lakes, charming hamlets, enchanting views and delicious foods to taste.

Let’s discover together some of these must-sees.

Bracciano Lake

The volcanic Bracciano Lake is the eighth biggest lake in Italy and is located approximately 30 kilometres north-west from Rome.

Known by locals and tourists for the lovely cities located along its perimeter, it is a touristic ideal destination especially for sailing lovers.

Bracciano city hosts the impressive Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, a walled papal Palace from Middle Age, famous even recently as it has been the venue of the celebrities’ wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Once, it was both a defence fortress and a residence for the feudal lords, Orsini and Borgia’s.

Here is a list of what to see in Bracciano, besides the lake and the castle:

  • 1) Santo Stefano’s Dome;
  • 2) Santa Maria Novella Church;
  • 3) Bracciano’s ancient village.

Other charming towns along the lake are Anguillara Sabazia, with its medieval downtown still perfectly kept and Trevignano Romano, very picturesque, with its coffee places, the swans on the river’s banks and the gorgeous sunsets.

Bolsena Lake

Bolsena Lake is situated in the north of Rome, next to Viterbo, and has probably been the location of an old Etruscan city.

The main cities nearby the lake are:

  • 1) Bolsena;
  • 2) Montefiascone, with its massive Cathedral;
  • 3) Capodimonte, located on a small peninsula on the lake with a hidden marina, ideal for swimming.

Bolsena is one of those places in which you can do many activities, according to your interests, and enjoy the clear air and the enviable weather.

This city combines the lake’s relaxed and romantic atmosphere with the proximity to the nature, as only the mountain can offer.

If you love walking, trekking, swimming or just relaxing, this is the place to be.

In addition to the lake, in Bolsena you can see:

  • 1) The downtown;
  • 2) Monaldeschi Rock, a castle built by the Orvietani family between - XIII and XIV century;
  • 3) Santa Cristina Collegiate, very relevant religiously and artistically;
  • 4) San Francesco Church, the most important religious building after the Collegiate.

Martignano Lake

This lake is out of the most known touristic paths, and is situated inside an extinguished crater.

It has no residential areas nearby, so it keeps its charm and austere beauty.

Its relaxed flare makes this an ideal place for the ones looking for some peace.

Martignano is the smallest lakes near Rome, a well-kept jewel that is overshadowed by the more famous Bracciano Lake, but still worth a visit as it is untouched and not ruined by progress.

This is a real natural shelter for a picnic, for nature’s lovers, for bikers, hikers and whoever wants to escape the stress of daily life.

The lake can host different types of excursions by canoe, kayak, or on horseback, very immersive.

From Rome’s city centre, the lake is easy to reach by car, but you will have to leave it in a specific parking area, as this place is part of the protected Regional Park

From the parking, a transfer will take you at the beginning of the path that reaches the lake, and even if it is winding, it is worth to have the walk and enjoy the breath-taking views.

Adding Lazio lakes to your bucket list will give you the opportunity to discover an untouched nature and relaxing, escaping the city’s chaos.
